Stockpiling
Yesterday, we talked about knowing WHAT to stockpile. Today, we are going to talk about knowing what a good price is.
The best way to know if the price you are paying is a good price, a great price or a rock-bottom price is to keep a price book. You can keep a price book of your stockpile items by using your receipts. (I keep every receipt!) Using the worksheets in the back of your workbook, you can list the items from your stockpile worksheet and start tracking the prices of those items.
In order to get an accurate view of how much you are spending on an item, you need to know the “Price Per Unit.” To figure the price per unit, you take the price and divide it by the unit (ounces, number of sheets, etc.)
Here are two examples:
Betty Crocker Brownie Mix
Size: 22.5 ounces
Price: $2.37
$2.37/22.5=
$0.11 per ounce
Northern Toilet Tissue
12 Roll Pack
Size: 200 sheets per roll
Price: $5.99
$5.99/2400=
$0.024 per sheet
Many stores (like Target & Walmart) will put the price per ounce on the shelf tag but do not put the price per unit on other items. Take a calculator with you to get the best deal!
Now, since most stores rotate their sales on a 6 to 8 week basis, you may want to track which weeks your favorite items are on sale. The best way to do this is to grab a calendar and number the weeks. Since drugstores begin their sales ads on Sundays and grocery stores begin on Wednesdays, you may need to have an “A” calendar and a “B” calendar. Mark the week that your item is on sale on your worksheet.
