Knowing Your Stores: Walmart

Walmart

Coupon Policy:
You may use 1 manufacturer’s coupon (MQ) per item.

Price Comp:
Walmart will match the price on the exact item sold at a competitor’s store if listed in the sales advertisement. You must have the advertisement and it must be the same item/size. Walmart will not match Buy One, Get One Free deals (BOGOs) or special Meal Deals. They do not match Register Rewards, Single Check Rebates, Extra Care Bucks or Gift Card promotions. NOTE: Mobile County Walmart stores will not comp ads from Publix or Food 4 Less at this time.

If a store loyalty card is required for the sales price at the competitor’s store, you must be in possession of that card and show it to the cashier.

How to “Comp” a Price
If you do not understand what it mean to “comp” a price, simply put, you are asking one store to match another store’s sales price. What is the best way to do that? You may come up with your own routinebut here are my suggestions:

Mark your shopping list with the sales price you want to comp and initials of the store where it is advertised.
Place post-it notes on the items you want to comp to help remember.
Tell the cashier before you start that you will be comping some items.
Try to group all your comp items together at the end.
Tell the cashier the price and show the ad.

But Doesn’t Walmart Watch Prices?
Walmart says that they watch the other stores and that they are the low price leader, but I can testify that this is not always true. Sometimes they watch the prices in the sales ads but not always. And, you probably do not realize that you are their volunteer workforce! When you “comp” a price, it is stored in their database and when enough “comps” are made, the manager is notified to lower the price on the shelf.

They do not watch for unadvertised sales prices. So, if another store is having an in-store special, they will no lower their prices to match that. For instance, right now Walmart is adverting their Rotel for $0.88 each. Target, however, has an unadvertised price of $0.80 each.

Walmart also will not match “everyday” low prices from other stores. If a store boasts that “this price” is their everyday price in a sales advertisment, you cannot even comp that price at Walmart.

Unknown to most, the store managers are allowed some choice in pricing items. If an item is not moving as quickly as they want, especially clearance merchandise, they might mark it down another price-point to clear the shelf quicker. So, one store’s prices may be completely different from the store across town.

A Walmart cashier also told me that they don’t price match from Publix, or Dollar General or Family Dollar. I did not know that? That happened a couple of months ago.

I know that they do not match Publix because they do not consider them a competitor… YET! They will when one is opened in Mobile County! I have never been told that they do not match Dollar General or Family Dollar. I would have pushed on that a bit. They also will not comp prices for Food For Less.

I know here in Enterprise/Dothan area Walmart does match Publix, Winn DIxie and they also honor the BOGO from other stores. Today I went into Walmart with my BOGO adverisments and my coupons I spent $452.00 but with the BOGO and coupons my purchase amount was $174.00 it took me three hours and the CMS of course was called over but I did not have a problem.

Thanks, Sheri. I am actually in the process of updating the Online Coupon Workshop to make it more “universal” so that is good to know. :)
