Coupon Workshop: Day Thirteen

Did you miss Day Twelve? Find it HERE.

Knowing Your Stores: Walgreens

Coupon Policy:
Walgreens will accept 1 manufacturer’s (MQ) per item AND 1 Walgreens Q (WAG) per item. However, the total number of coupons may not exceed the number of items per purchase. To work around this policy, you can use “filler items” to boost your item count. Great filler items include eggs or milk (when on sale), individual pencils, $0.49 greetings cards, sales items under $0.50.

WARNING: DO NOT grab items from around the cash register!  These items can be marked up as much as 400%!

Special Savings Situations

Sometimes you will notice this in your sales ad:

Register Rewards (RR)

Register Rewards (RR) are a purchase incentive paid out when you buy a specific item or set of items that pays out when the transaction is complete. RRs are to be used towards your next transaction and at most Walgreens, you can only use one RR per purchase. However, multiple transactions within one trip are acceptable.

One thing to note, if you do multiple transactions and pay with an RR for the same deal, a new RR will not print. For instance, if the deal is to purchase two canisters of Wet Ones and receive $1 RR (pictured below) and you want to work this deal twice, you should do separate transactions but do not pay for the second transaction with the $1 RR from the first or it will not print out again.

Here is an example transaction using the ad from above:

Buy 8 Stacy’s Pita Chips at $2.50
Use 7 $1/1 Stacy’s MQs
Use 1 MQ for FREE bag
Spend $10.50 plus tax out of pocket (OOP), Get $10 Register Rewards back!
$0.06/bag!

BOGOs

Buy One, Get One Free (BOGO) deals offer you two of the same or similar products for the price of one. If the deal is from a selection of items and you are purchasing two different items from that group, the one with the lowest price will be your free item.

Sometimes, there is a similar deal where you Buy One, Get One 50% Off.

This is the best way to get a deal with BOGOs: You can use 2 MQs and 2 WAGs (if available) for each pair of BOGOs! For an example, if you were purchasing the Scotch Tape BOGO (pictured above), you could use a MQ and a WAG for each item, meaning that you are using four coupons total. But, if these were your only items, you would need 2 filler items to use 4 Qs.

Walgreens Coupons (WAG)

A WAG is a Walgreens coupon that is good to use only in their store. Each WAG has a limit on the number you can purchase.   However, while you might be purchasing multiples at the coupon price, you are only being tagged for using one coupon.

In the example above, you can purchase up to 3 of this item but since use only one WAG (one coupon), it makes an EXCELLENT FILLER ITEM!

WAGS can be found in monthly coupon books, special magazines and in the Children’s Activity Book which can be found in the Children’s Book section for $0.99. These books are extremely difficult to find but are also available on Ebay.

Multiple Transactions

On most trips to Walgreens, I group my shopping into multiple transactions, rolling the RRs from one transaction to the next.

Here is an example of what I would do:

Transaction #1

2 Wet Ones (on sale for 2/$4) = $4
            – 2 MQ $1.50/1 ($3)
Total Out of Pocket (OOP) = $1.00
$1 RR prints

Transaction #2

8 Stacy’s Pita Chips (on sale for 2/$5) = $20
2 Kraft Macaroni & Cheese = $2.38
            – $7 (7 Stacy’s MQ – $1/1)
            – $2.50 (Stacy’s MQ – Free)
            – $1.20 (WAG – $0.59/Mac & Cheese)
            – $1 RR
Total Out of Pocket (OOP) = $10.68
$10 RR prints

Total OOP for Trip = $11.68
-          $10 RR for next trip = $1.68
-          94% SAVINGS!!

If this confuses you, please do not hesitate to contact me. Walgreens is one of my favorite stores to shop!

Your Assignment/s:

(1) Grab the weekly sales ad for Walgreens and browse it looking for examples of RRs, BOGOs and WAGs.  Try to think of sample transactions using those deals even if you are not interested in purchasing those items this week.  Place your samples in the comments.
