Coupon Workshop: Day Twelve

Knowing Your Stores: Target

Coupon Policy:
Target will accept 1 manufacturer’s (MQ) per item AND 1 Target Q per item. This is called “Stacking” when you can use two coupons on one item.

Price Comp:
Yes, Target will match the price on exact item sold at a competitor’s store if it is listed in the sales advertisement. Target will not comp advertisements for door busters or timed ads, such as a sale that has hours from 6AM until 1PM only.

If you are comping a price at Target, you cannot use a Target Q to lower the price further. You can, however, still use a MQ.

For produce, they will only comp a price if is is the exact same brand. If no brand is listed, they will no comp the price.

Other than these items, Target basically has the same rules as Walmart.

Special Savings Situations
Sometimes you will notice a special in the sales ad that states, “Purchase “x” number of selected items and get a Target gift card.” Do this transaction first and use the gift card to pay for the second transaction.

When you are on the Target mailing list, occasionally you will receive coupons for $5/$50. As with all other stores, hand this coupon to the cashier before your other coupons.

Also, when you use a reusable bag, you get $0.05 for each one deducted from your transaction. Some have said the cashier will only credit you for one bag, but the sign states that if you purchase the reusable bag, you will receive credit every time you use it. So, I would press on this issue especially if you are using the Target brand bag. In my opinion, if this is not their policy then they need to change the wording on the sign.

If you ever have trouble with the cashiers or management at Target, do not hesitate to contact the corporate office. They take these issues very seriously. I had a negative experience that you can read about HERE. After this incident, I contacted corporate about the problem through email and received a personal phone call of apology from one of the higher-ups. (Probably did not hurt that I copy/pasted the blog post into the email.) Shortly after it happened, the Target policy changed. I do not want to be so arrogant to think that I single-handedly changed Target but I think enough people were complaining that someone took notice.

Your Assignment/s:

(1) Think about your last trip to Target or look at an old receipt.  Do you notice any items for which you paid too much?

(2) Answer these questions in the comments: What makes Target different from Walmart?  What makes them the same?
