Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states but each state is different in how they handle it. Most states require that you choose to be covered under an organization such as a private school or church school but how those groups can be organized varies by state.
When we were first thinking about homeschooling our children, I was very clueless about the legal ramifications that were involved. I did not know the state requirements but I joined a homeschool cover that knew everything. I just had to read the handbook and I was good to go.
If you want to be more prepared than I was when we first started, you can always do the research yourself by studying the homeschooling laws by state. A synosis of homeschool laws by state on PDF might also be helpful.
We are members of the Homeschool Legal Defense Association and know that our homeschool rights are protected. Our homeschool cover school actually requires membership as a part of the requirements for schooling through their organization, but I am grateful since I have learned so much just by browsing their website.
The HSLDA has an amazing amount of resources available for ages and abilities. On their website, you can find information on standardized testing and even homeschooling special needs children.
I highly recommend the HSLDA as you get a lot for the investment, including an Online Curriculum Market. They will be right with you from the start and even offer a free copy of You Can Homeschool!
