Well… school is out for summer. What are you going to do with this child that is used to routine and structure? It is best to have a plan in your back pocket before they start climbing the walls and you lose your cool.
I like to break each week down like this:
SUNDAY ~ Church
MONDAY ~ Art Activity
We are working through How to Teach Art to Children.
TUESDAY ~ Outdoor Activity
This is not just a “send the kids out to play” day. Nope. We have that daily. These are special planned activities like:
- Paint with sidewalk chalk
- Plan a scavenger hunt
- Have relay races
- Play in the sprinkler or kiddie pool
- Host an outdoor movie
- Enjoy a shady picnic
WEDNESDAY ~ Science Activity
Find a great list of science projects available at PBS Zoom.
THURSDAY ~ Field Trip
This is going to be our day to visit museums, the mall, the Dollar Tree, play/activity zones, and such.
FRIDAY ~ Cooking
My children love to cook and I am not afraid to have them in the kitchen with my supervision if the tasks are easy. I like to let the children pick recipes from our kiddie cookbook collection: Sesame Street “C” is for Cooking, Paula Deen’s My First Cookbook
, and The Do It Myself Kids’ Cookbook: Nothing Hot, Nothing Sharp
.
SATURDAY ~ Kids Pick
Each Saturday, we rotate the child that gets to pick the activity. We plan these in advance and put them on the calendar so that we remember who picked and what we are doing. Repeats are okay but we try to do something different each week. It might be an adventure away from home or something in the backyard. You just never know what they will choose, although Lira has already put her choice in for bowling.
Don’t forget to take advantage of the local church’s Vacation Bible School! Our children love it and come home completely exhausted. The Saturday following VBS, we will have a pajama day and lay around watching movies all day so they will be rested for church on Sunday.
