I posted on Friday about the Designer Gourmet Apples I sell each year to help raise money for holiday expenses or Autism Therapy Bills. There were a lot of questions asked so I thought I would answer them for all of you to see.
How much time does it take to make one apple?
There are steps for some of the apples that can be done in advance. For instance, with the turkey (pictured), I make the head parts all at one time and keep them in the freezer. By doing that, I can make about 12 apples in 2 hours, including refrigeration time between layers.
Honestly, I try not to make just one at a time because it tends to take the same amount of time to prep one apple as it does 12. The only difference is the time to dip each apple.
About how many apples did you sell to make a $500 profit?
On average, I sell about 80 apples. Each apple costs about $3 to make, decorate and package. The cost of the items you need will vary based on your location and on which apple you prepare.
Do you think this would be a successful item at craft shows?
Absolutely! When I have done craft shows and school fall festivals in the past, I always take some for immediate sale and order forms for future orders.
Do you deliver?
I charge a fee for delivery unless it is an order of 10 or more apples at the same location.
Where could I sell the apples?
Everywhere I go the apples are a huge hit. People have never seen anything like them. I’ve sold them at local schools, to realtors, at craft shows and more. I’ve had interest from local delis and florist shops. I even had inquiries from a local grocery store. The possibilities are endless.
They make great gifts too. Teachers are the top profession of those who will receive an apple because many parents love to use them as teacher’s gifts.
