For a long time, I waited for canned goods to go on sale buy one, get one free before stocking up. Then, one day as we walked through Sam’s Club, I noticed the price per ounce on the large, cafeteria-size cans of tomato sauce and diced tomatoes. I was stunned because I had found one more way to save money.
At my local grocery stores, name-brand canned tomatoes go on sale for $1 a can or $0.067 per ounce. On a great day, I can get them for $0.83 a can at a buy one, get one free sale. This makes each can of tomatoes about $0.055 per ounce.
At Sam’s Club, these 6 pound 9 ounce cans of tomato sauce are $2.98. Do the math quickly and you find that this huge can of tomato sauce is only $0.028 per ounce.
You might think that is not much but bring the savings up to size and you will see that I am saving $2.94 on 105 ounces. That is the equivalent of almost 50% off the super-sale price.
To store the tomatoes, I leave the cans unopened until I need them. Then, I open the can and remove what I need for my current recipe. The remainder of the can’s contents is divided into recipe-sized increments and frozen in plastic storage containers or bags.
So simple to save so much!
