Essential Oils of Attention Deficit Disorder

The first time I suggested that my husband try essential oils for his ADD, he looked at me with that “please don’t make me smell like a girl” look. Poor guy! He didn’t realize that most essential oils smell natural, and you do not walk away from the bathroom smelling like the fragrance section in a department store.

Essential oils for attention deficit problems like ADD/ADHD

Essential Oils for Focus

Since the essential oils for Attention Deficit Disorder are the same as the ones we use for Autism, you might notice some similarities in this section to my post, Essential Oil for Autism.

Brainpower ~ Containing a blend of Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Melissa, Frankincense, Blue Cypress, Lavender, and Helichrysum, Brain Power can be diffused to increase concentration and focus. Brain Power can also be applied to the neck and throat. If you cannot diffuse essential oils at work, you might also consider a diffuser pendant worn on a chain and place under your shirt.

Vetiver ~ When Dr. Terry Friedmann, M.D tested the brain activity of children ages 6 to 14 who were diagnosed with an attention deficit problem, Vetiver was shown to help 100% of those who participated in the study.  You can dilute the Vetiver with a drop of almond oil to make it more manageable and smear a drop along the back of the necks from the base of the brain stem to where the spinal column meets the shoulders. SOURCE

Other oils that can be used include:

  • Clarity
  • Cedarwood
  • Frankincense

These oils are available at my Young Living Essential Oils website.

Essential Oils for Depression

Adults with ADD/ADHD are highly susceptible to depression and have a high instance of suicide. According to my understanding after conversations with my husband and his doctors, a person simply cannot settle in their minds and the frustration can bring about a constant state of depression. Treating the depression is critical.

Valor ~ One of my favorite oils, I honestly do not understand why Valor works but it truly lifts the spirit, restore confidence, and can bring motivation to an aimless day. We mix Valor with almond oil and apply it to the wrists, back of the neck, under the ears, or over out heart.

Other oils that can be used include:

  • Lavander
  • Frankincense
  • Harmony
  • Joy

These oils are available at my Young Living Essential Oils website.

Essential Oils for Rest

Stress can be debilitating for a person with ADD or ADHD, and sleep can be even more difficult. My husband often struggles to turn off his brain and if he has taken his prescription (Concerta), he can struggle to sleep even more.

Peace and Calming ~ Placed on feet at bedtime or along the sides of the neck, Peace and Calming can help a person unwind after a stressful day.  TESTIMONIAL

Lavender ~ If Peace and Calming does not work, you can diffuse Lavender for an equally soothing experience. We have also used a few drops of lavender in bath water or on a pillow.

Other oils that can be used for de-stressing include:

  • Stress Away
  • Tranquil
  • RutaVaLa

These oils are also available at my Young Living Essential Oils website.

  1. I had heard that vetiver is good for ADHD and I have a new bottle. However, mine is quite thick and I’m having a hard time getting it to drip out of the bottle, even a drop at a time. Do you have any suggestions on how to make an oil flow a bit more freely?

    • It is quite thick. I recommend removing the cap and diluting it with almond oil or another carrier oil so it is easier to use. Hope this helps and sorry that I did not see your comment until now. My inbox is filled with those nasty spam comments and I am having to sift through them. :(

  2. I just received my starter kit from Young Living and have been trying to figure out how to start with applying them to my son. I don’t have some of the oils mentioned but I can start with what I do have.
Do you have recommendations on what I can use and where to apply…etc.

    • I recommend getting the Higley guide from Abundant Living. It is an awesome book that details how to use each oil.
