If you are not a homeschool family (and have no plans to become one), then you have my permission to click the arrows on the side of this page to skip to the next post. BUT – and I am using my “mommy voice” here – if you ARE a homeschooling family, you MUST read this post.
I have never attended a homeschool conference, so why should you listen to me when I say, “You need to do everything you can to make it to a homeschool conference this year!?” Sounds kind of hypocritical, I know. But, I have never been so convinced that you and I have a responsibility to make this investment into our families.
Why Should You Attend a Homeschool Conference?
A couple of years ago, Bill and I were pressed by God to make a huge sacrifice in order for me to attend my first blogging conference.
(Hang with me. I know this sounds unrelated but there is a point coming…)
A little backstory
Attending that conference took a financial sacrifice as well as the support of my husband and parents as we have four kids who needed childcare while I was gone. However, over the course of that weekend, God changed my career, my family, and my life. I went from feeling like an outsider, like no one understood what I did, to being in a room full of people who knew exactly how I felt and wanted to encourage me to keep pursuing my dreams. Since, I have attended many more blogging conferences and each one has been a huge blessing.
The day conviction came
In December, God began to deal with me about how selfish I was being by spending the majority of my energy and prayers on my business, leaving my family dehydrated for attention spiritually. During that awakening (read: conviction), I realized how important a homeschool conference was.
This thought nagged me… if attending blogging conferences could have such a tremendous impact on our family, then how much more could a homeschool conference – where our faith is energized, our morals are supported, and our choice to live the homeschool lifestyle is encouraged – change the future of our family?
Meet me at Teach Them Diligently
So, before the new year even arrived, I committed to attending Teach Them Diligently in Spartanburg, South Carolina (April 3-5) and would love to meet you there. However, if you cannot make it to Spartanburg, Teach Them Diligently will also be in Nashville (March 20-22), Washington, D.C. (May 15-17) and Dallas (June 26-28).
So, should you attend a homeschool convention?
Ask yourself the hard questions that I had to face:
- Is my family a real priority?
- Do I want my family to be as successful as I am?
- Is there more that I could learn about homeschooling?
- Do I need encouragement to continue homeschooling?
- Is my family worth this investment?
- Could God bless the investment I make beyond my wildest dreams?
I believe the answer to all of these questions is a solid YES, but even if some of these leave you scratching your head… even if you could only answer YES to a few… even if you only answered YES to one… you should attend a homeschool convention.
