When it comes to decorating, nature can be our biggest inspiration. I love the look of birch trees and when I saw a candle holder that looked like a birch tree, I couldn’t wait to try and make one myself.
To begin, gather some vases or old jars or (or start saving your spaghetti sauce and jelly jars) and wash well. You may need to soak them or use some goo gone to remove the labels.
Wrap the outside of the jars in newspaper and tape off the tops. We are going to spray paint the inside and this will protect the outside and the rims.
For the inside, I thought a darker, metallic look would be nice so I used Metallic Copper spray paint by Krylon. I also did a couple in a metallic silver I had.
Then I just sprayed the inside of the jar coating the whole surface.
This allows the color to show through but the paint is on the inside.
Then using acrylic paint I had on hand, I blended two colors to get a creamy off-white color.
Then just paint a thin layer on the outside of your jar. It’s nice when it looks a little scratched. It looks more natural that way.
While the paint is still wet, take a Q-tip, stick, or other skinny object and start making small strokes in the paint. Make sure they are all different sizes and thicknesses. There is no right or wrong way to do this.
Once that dries, you will have this scratchy look on your jar.
Put some small candle votives in the jars, light, and enjoy.
This makes a nice look for the porch or at the Thanksgiving table this holiday season. It would also look great with Christmas decorations such as garland and white lights. There are lots of fun ways to use these. Enjoy!
