This is a sponsored post on behalf of Roku Streaming Stick. Opinions are my own.
Lately, my children have been begging for a movie night because we make it a big event.
The ultimate family night always requires pillows, sleeping bags, pajamas, popcorn, gummy bears (or chocolate for the kiddo in braces), and our Roku Streaming Stick.
The evening begins with everyone heading to the kitchen to make their own pizzas. We use pita bread as a crust
Individual Custom Pizzas
You could order pizza but making individual custom pizzas is much more fun!
I heat the oven to 450 degrees while the children create their own masterpieces. We use pita bread as a crust or my homemade pizza dough, a jar of pizza sauce, and shredded mozzarella cheese, but I also let the children choose from a variety of other toppings including:
- Diced ham
- Diced cooked chicken
- Sliced pepperoni
- Sliced mushrooms
- Diced bell pepper
- Sliced black olives
- Pineapple tidbits
- Shredded cheddar cheese
Our children are never allowed to eat in front of the television except for family movie night when we clear the coffee table and they huddle close with their pizzas and juice boxes.
Easy Home-Popped Popcorn
After dinner, we pause the movie to put our trash away and pop the popcorn.
I’m old-fashioned when it comes to popcorn because I hate chemicals. So, instead of using the microwave, we make popcorn on the stovetop. It’s easier than you think!
- Heat 3 tablespoons of canola oil in a large saucepan or stockpot over medium-high heat.
- Drop 2 (or 3) popcorn kernels into the pot and cover.
- When those kernels pop, add an even layer of popcorn kernels to the pot. Cover the pot again and the remove the pot from the heat for 30 seconds.
- Return the pot to the heat and the popcorn will begin popping rapidly. Shake the pot gently over the heat as the popcorn finishes. It’ will not take long.
Season as you desire, but I melt butter in the same pot and drizzle it over the popcorn, tossing with a bit of sea salt.
Picking a Family Movie
Does your family struggle to choose a movie? Check out this list of 101 movies for family movie night for inspiration.
If the children cannot reach an agreement on which movie, use the free printable movie selector by Bren Did designed like a cootie catcher.
You could also write the name of several family-friendly movies on a piece of paper and toss them all in a jar. One of the parents should pick one to avoid having the children blame one another for not choosing someone’s favorite.
“I told you to pick the other piece of paper!”
Or is that just in my house?
