Please remember that I am not a doctor. Just a mom who is sharing what works for her depression. This advice is not to be considered a substitute for discussing these problems with your doctor and the FDA does not support the validity of these claims.
Even on a commercial antidepressant, some days are harder than others and I need to use essential oils for depression. I need an extra boost to help take the edge off the sadness, energy loss, and irritability.
Essential Oils to Use for Depression
Warming the lemon in your hands by placing a drop in your non-dominant hand (the left hand for me) and rubbing your other hand over the oil in your palm about three times, cup your hands over your nose and inhale deeply three times. By inhaling the essential oil, the essence goes straight to the brain helping to lift your mood and improving your clarity of thought. You can then rub your hands down the sides or back of your neck so it can be absorbed through the skin.
Also, each morning, I put one drop of Lemon Essential Oil in my water. The lemon water helps to flush my liver of toxins. One word of caution, drink from a glass and not a plastic or styrofoam cup. Remember that these are 100% pure essential oils (not food flavoring or weakened essential oils) and the properties in the lemon can cause plastic and styrofoam to decompose.
Lemon Essential Oil can also be used for air purification, as an antiseptic in cleaning, and many, many other ways. Refer to page 89 of the Reference Guide for Essential Oils to view a complete listing of the benefits.
While Valor is best when applied to the spine or feet, I wear it on my wrists, applying one drop each morning and then again in the afternoon if needed.
Valor is a blend of essential oils containing Spruce, Rosewood, Blue Tansy, Frankincense, and Almond Oil. This blend helps balance the emotions and boost self-esteem.
Valor Essential Oil Blend can also be used for treating hyperactivity, attention deficit disorder, and aligning the skeletal system. Refer to page 200 of the Reference Guide for Essential Oils to view a complete listing of the benefits.
Joy is an excellent essential oil when you feel closed in and defeated. I wear Joy as a cross over my heart, praying as I apply it that God would seal my heart and mind for His purposes. You can also wear Joy on your wrists, behind your ears, on the neck, and on your temples. It can be placed in bathwater for a peaceful but lifting soak.
As a blend of essential oils containing Bergamot, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Rosewood, Lemon, Mandarin, Jasmine, Roman Chamomile, Palmarosa, and Rose, Joy Essential Oil Blend can open up the adrenal glands and adenoids. Inhaling can bring on feelings of love and acceptance.
Refer to page 175 of the Reference Guide for Essential Oils to view a complete listing of the benefits.
I think I use Lavender more than any other essential oil because it has a long list of uses. In regards to depression, Lavender Essential Oil lifts my mood, helps me sleep, and can remedy my headaches.
For depression, Lavender can be diffused or warmed in your hands and inhaled deeply three times. The aroma helps relieve tension, stabilizes mood, and dispels anxiety.
If you struggle to sleep, diffuse Lavender before bedtime, lightly mist your pillow with a mixture of water and oil, or place one drop behind your ears or along your spine.
Other uses for Lavender Essential Oil include treating allergies, lowering blood pressure, reducing indigestion, alleviating nausea, and much more. Refer to page 87 of the Reference Guide for Essential Oils to view a complete listing of the benefits.
Inhaling the fragrance of Christmas Spirit straight from the bottle can boost my mood and lift the depression, bring about warm feelings of happy family gatherings.
Christmas Spirit Essential Oil Blend contains Orange, Cinnamon Bark, and Spruce. While you can apply it topically, Christmas Spirit can cause skin sensitivity and should be diluted with a carrier oil. Refer to page 150 of the Reference Guide for Essential Oils to view a complete listing of the benefits.
