Giving a friend a gift in a jar is so special because you are not only giving them a present but an experience. They receive a meal (or dessert) as well as the aroma while it cooks and the time with family around the table enjoying your recipe.

We love giving food gifts to our neighbors and do so throughout the year, but this 5 Bean Soup Gift in a Jar was a perfect Christmas present.

The weather is dreary so who wouldn’t enjoy a nice warm bowl of soup?

Bean Soup Gift in a Jar

You will need:

  • 1 pound dry kidney beans
  • 1 pound dry lentils
  • 1 pound dry black beans
  • 1 pound dry split peas
  • 1 pound dry great white northern beans
  • Dry minced onion
  • Garlic powder
  • Celery salt
  • Salt
  • Brown sugar
  • Red pepper flakes, optional
  • 4 pint-size jars with lids
  • 4 zip-top plastic sandwich bags

This yields enough for four gifts but costs only $3 to $4 per gift.

Layer the beans in the jar. Then mix the following spices and placing in a zip-top plastic bag:

  • 2 tablespoons minced onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery salt
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional

Make one seasoning bag for each jar.

How to Make Bean Soup

If you save a jar of soup for yourself, preparing the 5 Bean Soup is simple.

A delicious and comforting gift in a jar. Give 5 Bean Soup as a gift for neighbors, teachers, community servants, church staff... anyone! Final cost is about $3 to $4 per gift. Includes free printable gift tag.

Additional ingredients:

  • 1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 4 tablespoons red wine vinegar, optional

Directions:

  1. Remove seasoning packet and reserve for later.
  2. Place beans in a large bowl and cover with four to six cups of water. Cover and refrigerate to soak overnight.
  3. In the morning, drain beans and rinse well.
  4. Place beans in large stock pot and add seasoning packet, water, and chicken broth.
  5. Cook over medium-low heat for two hours, adding water if needed.
  6. Prior to serving, add additional salt, black pepper, and red wine vinegar if desired.

If you want to stir in cooked sausage, ham, or chicken, it would still be amazing!
