Life around here is not always easy, especially when it comes to chores. I do not ask a lot from the children since they are young, but there are some things they should do on a daily basis. Paying the children to do daily chores is not an option for me. We are a family, a team, and certain things must be done to keep our family running in an orderly fashion. Besides, I don’t get paid!
Since I cannot bribe the children to get them to do their chores, I had to get a little creative and I created chore charts.
I laminated the charts and checks and then attached Velcro dots. Now that I think of it, I could have used a dry erase marker instead of the Velcro but the kids really like the dots.
Each time they finish a column, I give a simple reward (like a sticker or a M&M candy – just one).
We have the charts hanging in the hallway outside their bedrooms so they can be reminded of what they should do.
Before school, I say, “Chart Time!” Everyone reports to the hallway and we check-off the items they have completed.
Morning chores must be done before school. Evening chores must be done before family prayer time.
This chore chart for young children is simple, basic. But, there are other things I think the children can do to.
Other Chore Ideas for Young Children
For these extra chores, the children can earn another reward. I list the chores on my laminated chore list and place it on the refrigerator. These chores might include:
- Put away the clean silverware
- Wipe the bathroom counter
- Clean the bathroom mirror (with supervision)
- Clean the bathroom sink (with supervision)
- Dust the living room
- Vacuum
- Feed the cats
- Sweep the sidewalk
- Wipe the dinner table
- Set the table (with supervision for the young ones)
- Pick up toys in the backyard
- Wash the car (with adult help)
- Fold and put away laundry
You might be thinking that your child is too young for some of these items. Dr. Kevin Leman says that you should not do anything for your child that they can do for themselves. How do you know what they are capable of until you let them try?
