I’m a southern girl who loves fried chicken, potato salad, cole slaw, and banana pudding… but I hate to fry anything! So the deli at Walmart offers me the perfect solution for a July 4th menu. Pick up the fried chicken. Make the sides and dessert. Delicious and easy!
There is just something about walking through the doors at Walmart and smelling that amazing fried chicken. Puts me back in my mother’s kitchen where chicken is frying while the potato salad and creamy cole slaw dressing waits in the refrigerator.
Oh my goodness!
Bless my southern heart!
Now, I love fried chicken. Yes indeed! But, I hate the messy frying process. Ick. And cleaning up the kitchen afterwards? Just not worth it. So, I can let the tempting smell of Walmart’s fried chicken persuade me into an easy menu idea for July 4th holiday, a picnic at the beach, or a midweek dinner.
Make a batch of potato salad and prepare the creamy cole slaw dressing the night before.
I do not recommend mixing the cole slaw until 2 hours prior to eating since it can get soggy but the potato salad will actually taste better if refrigerated overnight.
When you send your Honey to pick up the chicken, but be sure to tell him or her what to get because Walmart has tons of choices when in comes to fried chicken. I got an 8 piece “grab-n-go” (found close to the check out or in the deli) with some extra chicken tenders, but they also have barbecue, buffalo, popcorn chicken, and more.
Plus, you can purchase fried chicken at Walmart in single pieces, a box, or in bulk with 50 to 100 pieces for big parties. (Call ahead for large orders!)
And if you really want to treat the family, prepare a big banana pudding or use 8 ounce mason jars to make individual sizes, perfect for a picnic.
Just break three Nilla wafers into pieces in your hand and drop them into the bottom of the jar. Top with a scoop of vanilla pudding, a layer of thinly sliced bananas, and a dollop of whipping cream. Then, repeat the layers and finish with finely crushed Nilla wafers.
It’s a super easy summer supper.
