This Alice in Wonderland unit study is a great way to help kids develop an interest in classic children’s literature! The book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll is a very popular kids’ novel and with good reason. Within the story, Alice goes on so many adventures that it’s hard to keep track of them all!
However, this story can be far more than just a fun read. It can serve as the basis for a very thorough unit study, complete with activities for writing, math, science, and history!
Alice in Wonderland Art Ideas
Several editions of Alice in Wonderland has been illustrated by various artists over the years. Examine the different Alice in Wonderland illustrations at Brain Pickings, and then talk about the similarities and differences you see.
After reading the story, ask your child to draw a picture of Alice and the principal characters of the book, including the Queen of Hearts and the White Rabbit.
Science Activities for Alice in Wonderland
Animals play several key roles in the book. This is a great opportunity to talk about biology with your kids. Look up various animals from the book using the links below:
After you’ve read about each animal, ask your kids to describe each animal’s scientific classification and three interesting facts they learned from the reading.
Alice in Wonderland Language Ideas
Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland, used a pen name to write the story. His actual name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Ask your kids to create their own pen names. Silly names make the best pen names!
Take one scene out of the story and create an alternate ending for it. For example, when Alice eats the cake in Chapter 1 and grows larger, think of a different side effect that could occur.

Math Activities for Alice in Wonderland
Playing cards are referred to a lot during the story, particularly the royal cards such as kings, queens, and jacks. Play some card games that teach math concepts such as addition and subtraction!
You can also discuss measurement and comparison as you read the story. Alice changes sizes several times as the story goes on, growing larger and shrinking smaller. Talk about the differences between big and small or work on ordering objects from smallest to greatest by size.
