Lately, this has been the question I am most asked:
“Penny, Where do you buy your meat?”
Most of the time, unless there is a huge sale in another store, I purchase my meat at Winn Dixie or Target. Everytime I am in one of those stores, I make it a habit to browse buy the meat counter looking for a manager’s special. I tend to stay away from stuffed items and buy basics like chicken breasts or leg quarters, lean ground beef, chuck roast or steaks, ground turkey, pork loin or pork chops.
These items are still perfectly acceptable as a marked down item although if it appears to be changing colors, I skip over it. Keep in mind that meat marked down should be frozen or used immediately.
The other alternative is to watch your price list. Know your prices on meat to avoid being suckered into buying something overpriced. For instance, sometimes, a BOGO sale is not a great deal. If you wait a week or two, you will find a half-price sale or lowest price on the same item which will save you even more.
Why don’t I buy meat at a warehouse club? Simply, their best prices are a penny or two higher than the best prices you can find in other stores. If you are in a pinch and need something in particular in a pinch, then perhaps it might be cheaper to buy there if you do not have time to wait for a sale. And, if you find a managers special at one of these big -box clubs, stock up because these do tend to be great deals.
As always, watch your price list and if you see a deal, stock up!
