Birthday Cake Ideas from Me to You

As I said before, there are years when I have awesome cakes and there are years when I have… cupcake towers.

Will you allow me to boast share with you a few of the good ones?

Mixed Cake Shapes

This was a super, simple birthday cake for a Blue’s Clues birthday party. I made a single layer round cake and used the rest of the batter for cupcakes. The icing was white store-bought with some blue gel coloring mixed in for a few and the main cake. It made a cute paw print! (The cupcake rings on the white cupcakes were picked up from Ebay.)

I made a similar birthday cake using a round cake and cupcakes to make a teddy bear’s face.

Use Packaged Products for Help

By far, this was the most challenging cake I ever made. I did a lot of research at my favorite birthday cake website (before there was Pinterest) and was grateful that so many had tried this before me. To make Rocket, it required a lot of shaping and some Twinkies. Yes, Twinkies for the rocket boosters… and graham crackers… and toothpicks.

Buy a Toy

Then, the cupcake cakes became popular. Surprisingly, this was very easy since I could buy the car and the sugar letters. Seriously, toys can make a cake so simple. Spend just a few dollars for your character and then use the cake as your backdrop.

Print Pictures from the Internet

Then again, sometimes all you need is a printer and some cardstock. I grabbed the images of Mario and Luigi from the internet and attached them to toothpicks to make my own figures. The pipes are actually cupcakes.
