What did you have for dinner last night? What did you have for breakfast or lunch today? Perhaps a handful of soggy popcorn or a half-eaten sandwich… half-eaten because someone else enjoyed the other part and left it on the table as they made a hasty exit to avoid the pungent odor drifting from your side of the room?
Most of us will never experience the harsh reality of homelessness and would not even want to briefly daydream about volunteering for such a lifestyle. Mike Yankoski is not like most of us… but he once was.
When living the life of an ordinary Christian was not enough, Mike took a huge step, recruited a partner (Sam) and decided to assume the life of a homeless person for roughly five months in order to uncover the authenticity of his faith. Traveling the country, he gains a new understanding of God’s mercy as he relies on the provision of God and the benevolence of others to carry him through extreme hunger pangs, sleepless nights, and the dangers of street life among the masses of other invisible homeless in America.
After journeying with Mike and Sam through the pages of this book, you will find your former assumptions of the homeless melt away and you will remember, “…all of God’s children are beggars at the foot of the Cross, broken people in need of mending.”
