Essential Oil Therapy: Peppermint for Headaches

Share & Help Me Grow

As a part of the Healthy Family Project, our family is experimenting with Essential Oils. Every once in a while, I share what I am learning.

Essential Oils for Headaches

Using Peppermint Essential Oil for Headaches

I woke one Saturday morning with a terrible headache that was probably related to my sinuses. I decided to try Peppermint Essential Oil as an alternative to an over-the-counter headache product. I rubbed a little on my temples and it eased the headache.

Using Peppermint Essential Oil for Migraines

On another occasion, I had a three-day migraine. In my research, I discovered that you can use Lavender and Peppermint together.

First, place two drops of Peppermint Essential Oil in the palm of your hand and rub your hands together. Cup your hands over your nose and breathe deeply several times. Rub your hands across the back of your neck.

Then, repeat the exact same process with the Lavender Essential Oil.

While this will probably not take your pain away completely, using the essential oils for my migraine took the edge off and I was able to walk around with feeling ill.

Other Uses for Peppermint Essential Oil

These statements have not been verified by the Food and Drug Administration but many people testify that peppermint essential oil has helped with these issues:

  • Soothes cramps and abdominal issues
  • Treats bad breath
  • Creates alertness and curbs poor concentration
  • Increases memory
  • Comforts those with  indigestion, nausea, morning sickness, motion sickness, gas

Peppermint Essential Oil has also been useful in treating allergies, carpal tunnel, polyps in the colon, paralysis, ringworm, scabies, varicose veins, and much more as listed in Reference Guide for Essential Oils by Connie and Alan Higley.

About Tabitha

Hi! I'm Tabitha! But, I bet you expected someone named "Penny." Long story made short, Penny is the coupon binder I started in 2010 when we were totally broke... as in BANKRUPT. Now, as a mom of five, I make 6-figures a year working at home and share ways to help you move from penny to profit while you raise a family with sense on cents.

Lydia, jumping in here because I don’t think Tabitha will mind. But to help my kiddos with concentration sometimes I use an oil called Brain Power (I know . . . crazy name) but have seen greater memory retention. The reason being? Some oils are high in what is called sesquiterpenes. This oils are able to pass the blood/brain barrier and address issues within the brain — either to aide or heal. Another oil I use is called Vetiver or Frankincense. Both help to calm the kiddos — Vetiver especially for ADD or ADHD kiddos. I use it in my Classical Converstaions co-op and have seen such a difference for some of my kiddos to concentrate. And to relieve stress — lavender or stress away. Hope that helps!!! Great question! Tabitha can help you out if you are interested in any of these oils.

I just wanted to let you know that those were not your temples. Your temples are on the side of your head about an inch away from your eyes toward your hairline. Hope your headache is gone!
