The first time I suggested that my husband try essential oils for his ADD, he looked at me with that “please don’t make me smell like a girl” look. Poor guy! He didn’t realize that most essential oils smell natural, and you do not walk away from the bathroom smelling like the fragrance section in a department store.
Essential Oils for Focus
Since the essential oils for Attention Deficit Disorder are the same as the ones we use for Autism, you might notice some similarities in this section to my post, Essential Oil for Autism.
Brainpower ~ Containing a blend of Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Melissa, Frankincense, Blue Cypress, Lavender, and Helichrysum, Brain Power can be diffused to increase concentration and focus. Brain Power can also be applied to the neck and throat. If you cannot diffuse essential oils at work, you might also consider a diffuser pendant worn on a chain and place under your shirt.
Vetiver ~ When Dr. Terry Friedmann, M.D tested the brain activity of children ages 6 to 14 who were diagnosed with an attention deficit problem, Vetiver was shown to help 100% of those who participated in the study. You can dilute the Vetiver with a drop of almond oil to make it more manageable and smear a drop along the back of the necks from the base of the brain stem to where the spinal column meets the shoulders. Other oils that can be used include:
- Clarity
- Cedarwood
- Frankincense
Essential Oils for Depression
Adults with ADD/ADHD are highly susceptible to depression and have a high instance of suicide. According to my understanding after conversations with my husband and his doctors, a person simply cannot settle in their minds and the frustration can bring about a constant state of depression. Treating the depression is critical.
Valor ~ One of my favorite oils, I honestly do not understand why Valor works but it truly lifts the spirit, restore confidence, and can bring motivation to an aimless day. We mix Valor with almond oil and apply it to the wrists, back of the neck, under the ears, or over our heart.
Other oils that can be used include:
- Lavender
- Frankincense
- Harmony
- Joy
Essential Oils for Rest
Stress can be debilitating for a person with ADD or ADHD, and sleep can be even more difficult. My husband often struggles to turn off his brain and if he has taken his prescription (Concerta), he can struggle to sleep even more.
Peace and Calming ~ Placed on feet at bedtime or along the sides of the neck, Peace and Calming can help a person unwind after a stressful day. TESTIMONIAL
Lavender ~ If Peace and Calming does not work, you can diffuse Lavender for an equally soothing experience. We have also used a few drops of lavender in bath water or on a pillow.
Other oils that can be used for de-stressing include:
- Stress Away
- Tranquil
- RutaVaLa

I had heard that vetiver is good for ADHD and I have a new bottle. However, mine is quite thick and I’m having a hard time getting it to drip out of the bottle, even a drop at a time. Do you have any suggestions on how to make an oil flow a bit more freely?
Penny says
It is quite thick. I recommend removing the cap and diluting it with almond oil or another carrier oil so it is easier to use. Hope this helps and sorry that I did not see your comment until now. My inbox is filled with those nasty spam comments and I am having to sift through them. 🙁
Bonita says
Where do you suggest getting Essential Oils from?
Penny says
As long as they are 100% therapeutic grade, you can get them from many reputable distributors. I cannot name a particular company since the FDA doesn’t like that. 🙁

YoungLiving is what I recommend
personontheinternet says
While, yes, the FDA is… strict. I have been using Young Living for years and will always recommend them.
Greg says
bulkapothecary.com has extremely high quality with incredible prices.

I will also take the top off but I dip a clean toothpick in to get a true “drop” measure.
Michelle HALES says
I bought bottles with roll ball tops for essential oils on amazon then rolled on back of neck. Works perfect.
Terri says
I just received my starter kit from Young Living and have been trying to figure out how to start with applying them to my son. I don’t have some of the oils mentioned but I can start with what I do have.
Do you have recommendations on what I can use and where to apply…etc.
Penny says
I recommend getting the Higley guide from Abundant Living. It is an awesome book that details how to use each oil.
Angela says
I know this sounds strange; but Pinterest. If researching ADHD then be sure to search “young living essential oils adhd” or “young living essential oils bath salts” or “young living essential oils face cremes”. What ever you are researching. There are several blends. Coconut oil and Almond oil are the best carriers oils. Be sure to use glass jars – no plastic jars.

I would not recommend using an oil on a child unless you have permission from the parent. If you think it might help defuse them in your classroom but do not apply anything to anyone child without permission.

I have been doing research on essential oils for ADD and ADHD for my son, comparing information and trying to find essential oils that are safe for kids. I’m interested in using a blend but I’m not sure which to buy. This site has some great recommendations and information for blends of essential oils that can treat ADHD but I’m wondering how the kids safe blends they recommend compare to “Clarity”. That’s a Doterra oil isn’t it?
Liz Kelly says
Can you please tell me what essential oils are used in the blends you name as Valor, Harmony Peace Joy and Sress Away?? I only buy bottles of single essential oils and try blend my own, so just curious about whats in those..
Thanks so much..
Liz

Try Jeddy’s Blend – It is a natural alternative with oils and also comes in a salve.
Karen Brown says
can I use fractionated coconut oil with Vetiner? My grandson can become bored easy and become disruptive by talking and moving.
Penny says
Absolutely. I use almond oil and coconut oil.

I tried putting the essential oils on the back of my 8 year olds neck but the scent gave him a terrible head ache & sick to his stomach. I did some research and found that it could be applied to his feet? What are you thoughts on that and is it as effective Hoping this will work … not a fan of treating ADD with medications.
Samantha Smith says
I was diagnosed with ADHD at 38 years old. Most people with ADHD are unaware of the disorder because the disorder, well, causes us to not pay attention to ourselves. I would interrupt people while they were talking, even though I knew it was rude, because I knew if I waited until they were finished talking that I would have already forgotten what I was going to say. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety when I was 15 years old to the time I was 38 and despite all medications nothing works for me and I became suicidal. It wasn’t until I met someone who had ADHD and they recognized my behavior and suggested that I get checked. they told me I was on the extreme end of the spectrum and that it wasn’t a serotonin problem it was a dopamine problem. On medicated for ADHD my depression and anxiety we manageable, I no longer wanted to die. A whole new world opened up, I did not realize that I didn’t have to live that way or feel that way.. I was placed on Vyvanse and continue to take it for a year-and-a-half until I lost my insurance. I am now not medicated and my life quickly returned back to the chaos and dysfunction. Except now it is worse than it was before. I know how dysfunctional my life is now having seen the other side.. A psychiatrist friend of mine who’s also ADHD, suggested to me that it would be like giving someone back their eyesight for a year-and-a-half and then taking it away from them. I am working to get back on insurance so that I can get my medication and return back to life. the struggle is that while I am not medicated it is very hard for me to focus enough to work any job and my depression and anxiety are also back and left unchecked. This biochemical brain disorder is not a punchline or to be taken lightly by the sufferer or society. It can be debilitating so I was not surprised at the suicide rate statistics. I will not be one of the statistics because I have a son with schizophrenia that I would never leave in this world alone. another study has shown that people with ADHD have been linked to having children with schizophrenia and that ADHD is the most inheritable disorders, it is as inheritable as someone’s height. Genetically speaking. so I want to thank you for speaking out for the ones like me that can’t always articulate what’s going on in our own minds because we don’t understand it ourselves. Thank you for the great advocacy you are doing and spreading information about the gambit of symptoms that go with it. ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
