If you feel completely clueless about family finance, struggle to understand where your money goes each month, or just need a better way to track your spending, our free printable family finance organizer will help pull your spending and saving together into one binder.
Don’t think you need a family finance binder?
Let’s think about this together.
Reasons you need a Family Finance Planner
Maybe your life has been peachy for the last several years. You wake each day and check your bank balance. If it looks a little short for the upcoming bills, you make a quick transfer from savings or find a way to make a quick buck to create enough of a cushion to keep Mr. Bank’s tummy full.
So why should you bother with a family finance organizer?
Know where your money is going
One of the scariest games my husband and I have played with our personal finances is called, Blind Man’s Money.
In this game, you put a jar of cash in the middle of the room and pull out a handful of bills while blindfolded.
With your first wad of money, you have to pay your bills. Then, you can return to the jar to pull out another handful of cash to pay for groceries and gasoline.
Whatever remains in the jar… This is the money you have to live off for the rest of the month and you HOPE it is enough to pay everything including those unexpected expenses.
Okay, so I totally made that game up. But if you are walking around in this oblivious state of financial denial, you might as well be playing games with your money.
Why do we do this? I mean… you wouldn’t walk into your closet without a light and get dressed! Who knows what you would end up wearing and if it would even match?
Then why do we approach our finances blindly when they are much more serious than the clothes we wear?
Make better choices
You need to know where you money is going so you can make sure you are maximizing what you have.
I have lived a life where we spent money without considering what would happen when I receive an unexpected bill the next day. And what happened?
- Oops! I forgot about that debit transfer!
- Uh no! The hot water heater died!
- How did we bounce a check?
When I am watching our family finances, I can consider our priorities and make better choices with the money with which God entrusts to us.
Prepare for the unexpected
When I consider the last decade or more, I can easily see the pitfalls we made with our finances, like our bankruptcy and when we almost lost our home. There are other incidents far less detrimental, but each has a definite similarity…
We did not plan ahead.
Most of the worst moment were the results of something completely unexpected: a job loss, a weather disaster, a sick child… If only we had been prepared for those instances!
Having money ready in case of an emergency eliminates stress, provides for your family in times of need, and JUST. MAKES. SENSE.

Stewardship is not a characteristic with which we are born. We must learn to be responsible with our money because, after all, it doesn’t really belong to us.
Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things. Wealth and honor come from you alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand, and at your discretion people are made great and given strength. O our God, we thank you and praise your glorious name!
Everything we have is a loan from the Lord and intended for a specific purpose… to bring Him glory.
If we spend without thought and fail to see where our money is going, we miss the opportunity to grow through faithful stewardship.

I cannot tell you how many times we finally got things under control only to have the rug pulled out from under us due to an unexpected financial hit. When we finally opened up a checking account that we earmarked specifically for unforeseen expenses it was a game changer. Knowing we had a cushion just in case really helped us to keep our eye on the debt repayment ball and progress at a quicker rate.
Great advice! Love the printables! 🙂

It often seems like a never-ending cycle of junk. Like being pulled into a financial Bermuda Triangle. Right?!

I’m trying to figure out how to subscribe and having trouble. Maybe it’s because I’m on my phone, or maybe I’m just too tired. LOL Any help appreciated, this looks like an awesome download!

Hey Tasha! I’m sorry I didn’t get a notification about your question. Were you able to see the subscription box? There is a box for name and email address. Then the printables come to your inbox.

My PDF only came with the Family planner cover and the check book register…we dont use checks, but I am going to use the register for our Debit card stuff. Do the other PDF’s (Budget Worksheet Account Tracker Bill / Payments Log
Debt Paydown Worksheet Expense Log ) come weekly? Daily? Or were they to be included with the first email??
Tabitha says
That is very bizarre, Suzanne! I’m sorry the file did not send completely. There are two folders zipped together. Please email me and I can make sure you get the complete zipped file.

I just found your blog tonight and I enjoy it very much! I subscribed and received the link for the finance binder, but when I got the email, only the cover page and the checkbook register were included. I saw that some of the other commentators had the same experience, so I am hoping that I can partake of whatever solution was provided for them. Thank you so much and I look forward to having our money back under control!

The Zipped files did the same thing to me as another person commented back in March. I only received a file with the binder cover and the check register. I have tried to see if there was a way I could unzip the file differently., that maybe I was doing something wrong, but seems to not be me causing this. I will look for you email, as that was your direction with the other individual and send you an email, with the hopes of receiving these files! Thank you so much.
