Growing up, my family visited Dauphin Island more than Gulf Shores. My memories of those days are as warm as the sand on a gorgeous day… except for the incident where my Dad almost drowned me! It was an accident, of course. Anyway, this weekend offers you the chance to make some family memories of your own… just wear a life jacket. (Just kidding!)
The eight annual Dauphin Island Art and Crafts Festival will be Saturday, April 17th from 9 AM until 4 PM at St. Francis Episcopal Church on the east end. The word of 50 different artists will be exhibited and are available for purchase. Food sales will benefit Wilmer Hall Children’s Home in Mobile. The Sand Island Lighthouse Association will also be accepting donations and have goods available for fundraising to preserve the lighthouse.
Also on Saturday, The Dauphin Island Sea Lab will be open FREE to children from 10 AM until 2 PM with adults receiving a discounted admission and a 15% off sale in the gift shop.
This fun-filled family event includes a variety of environmentally-themed children’s activities; an Open House at the Research Facilities of the DISL where the public can interact with scientists and graduate students to explore their ongoing research projects; and free children’s admission to the Estuarium, the aquarium at the Sea Lab.
The USCG Aviation Training Rescue will demonstrate a thrilling helicopter rescue just off our shoreline; Azalea Trail Maids will be on hand to greet visitors. Local agencies will host fun environmentally themed kids’ activities and games.
