Keep the kids entertained using bubble wands they create themselves with this homemade bubble solution.
Blowing bubbles can be fun for all ages.
I think I was about 20 years old when I took some bubble solution over to our air conditioner unit and allowed millions of bubbles to blow across the highway. I wanted to see if I could distract the drivers… Probably not my finest moment, but let’s keep that between us and not share the idea with my kids.
There are better ways to use this easy bubble solution.
Homemade Bubble Solution
The homemade bubbles recipe is simple:
- 6 cups water
- 1 cup corn syrup
- 1 1/3 cup concentrated dishwashing liquid
I recommend stirring the corn syrup and dishwashing liquid together first and then adding it to the water. Stir the mixture into the water gently to avoid making a foamy, frothy layer on the top.
For best results, the top should be clear of bubbles. Keep a slotted spoon or fine strainer handy for skimming the top.
DIY Bubble Wands
Next, let the creativity begin!
Pull out straws, string, and chenille stems, encouraging the children to make their own homemade bubble wands.
You can make huge bubble with a wand made from two straws and about 15 inches of string. Lace the string through the straws and tie the ends together. Pull the straws apart (parallel to one another) allowing the string to hang on each side.
Dip the wand into the homemade bubbles solution and then pull upward. The yarn may cling together at first but as you pull, a large bubble should form.
Ask this children, “Can you make bubbles in shapes other than round?” Let them try, and then show them how to make square bubbles. Oh yes!
