Homemade Holiday: 2 Too-Easy Tulle Tutu Costumes

Share & Help Me Grow

easy tutu halloween costumes

Last year, Lira wanted to be a white mouse at the church’s Fall Festival. I am not creative and while I can sew, I’m not very good at it. So, my work was cut out for me… no pun intended.

I remembered seeing a post about how to make a tutu and decided that would be the base of the costume. Then, I thought, “If I am going to make a tutu and have all this white tulle, maybe I can make something for Ariary too.”

Pretty Poodle

Walking through Hobby Lobby, I found a crocheted infant headband and knit leggings. Inspiration struck. I decided to make Ariary into a poodle.

In addition to the tiny tutu, I made much smaller tutus to go around her ankles. Then, I made pom-poms from the tulle and attached them to the headband and at the end of two oval-shaped pieces of felt that would become the ears for my poodle.

I stitched the “ears” to the crocheted headband under the pom-pom in the middle and then attached a red bow.

Since the night was cool, Ariary wore a white onesie under her sweater and tutu skirt. All she needed was a dab of black face paint for the perfect poodle nose.

Mischievous Mouse

Lira was very specific about her costume. She had to have a red nose, pink ears, and a tail.

For the ears, I cut two semi-circles from pink felt and loop-stitched them to one of her headbands. That was simple.

But, the tail…

I purchase a yard of white flannel and cut it into a very, very long and very wide triangle. Then, I rolled it up like a cinnamon roll and worked it so it was wider at one end and pointed on the other. All that was left was to stitch the tail closed and attached it to the tutu.

Lira also wore a white shirt under a white hoodie and white shorts with tights. We tried using white hairspray too.

Not sure if I made Mom of the Year status, but Lira was very happy.

What type of homemade costumes have you made in the past?
