With four children ages ten and under, I find it increasingly difficult to find unique gift ideas for the kids. Each Christmas, I seem to return to the same toys that a younger child has already owned, but I am determined that this Christmas I will find the hot toys of the year… within my budget… and one of those has already landed on our doorstep, Zoomer Dino by Spin Master.
When I first opened the box for our new pet dinosaur, my children were excited but somewhat reserved about this new technological toy.
Okay… it was more than that because they were standing on the far side of the room and even while they were smiling, I had to coax them to come closer.
As they watched me interact with Zoomer Dino, their reservations seemed to dissipate and I was having to release control of the remote pod to my children.
All of my children have played with him equally. Our three year old does not understand how to use the remote pod but she still loves interacting with Zoomer Dino.
I think most of his appeal comes from his behavior because he has a mind of his own, although you can try to tame him. And he has this amazing ability to balance on his two wheels. Spin Master calls it “True Balance Technology.”
If Zoomer Dino falls forward, he can stand back up on his own. If he goes to sleep in that position or seated on his tail, one touch the to button on his back will awaken him and he will stand and be ready for more play.
Personally, I love hearing his dinosaur-like sounds. The little chitters and chuckles he makes are adorable. Of course, my boys love when he burps and farts. Yes, this will be a hot toy for the boys!
But the girls appreciate Zoomer Dino too, especially when it looks like this tiny T-Rex is dancing.
Despite his noises and movements, his eyes are actually the key to knowing Zoomer Dino’s moods. Green means he is alert and ready. Blue denotes a sensing mode when he is waiting for instructions either from the remote pod or your hand.
You will know he is ready for training when his eyes glow purple, and with simple hand signals, you can give him commands.
And then, there is red.
Red means Zoomer Dino is not really in the mood for a hug, although my daughter thinks a hug can make anyone feel better.
With red eyes, Zoomer is angry and you are never sure what will set him off into a tantrum. Once, he bumped into our door and was instantly mad as if the door should jump out of his way. Another time, a child pulled his tail and his eyes turned red as he mad ferocious dinosaur noises.
I would actually compare his angry mood with that of a toddler throwing a tantrum. He just makes me laugh at the silliness of it. I talk more about my affection for Zoomer Dino is this video.

Zoomer Dino charges using a USB cord (included) and each charge will last about 30 minutes. His remote pod requires three AA batteries.
Recommended for ages 5 and up, everyone in our home – from the three year old to my husband – loves playing and interacting with Zoomer Dino. This is like having your very own pet dinosaur!
