How to Make a Super Mario Cake

When planning my oldest son’s birthday party last year, I really wondered how to make a Super Mario birthday cake. He loves Super Mario Bros ANYTHING and a complete plush collection of all the Super Mario friends. I had no choice but to find a way to make a Super Mario cake.

Super Mario Cake Step-by-Step

When you break the Super Mario Bros cake into steps, the process is actually simple.

I started with a chocolate and a vanilla cake mix. I used half of the batter from each mix to bake a cake round and used the remainder for cupcakes.

One full cake round serves as the face. Cut the other cake round into a sharp that fits the face like a hat.

Cut the top off one cupcake to be the nose and set it aside. Cut the the bottom off a cupcake and slice in half to be the ears.

Because many people do not like fondant, I like to cover the cakes with frosting to give it a delicious layer of creamy goodness and extra flavor.

I make a marshmallow fondant for birthday cakes because it is easy and children love the taste.

For the Super Mario cake, you will need fondant colored red, brown, skin tone, black, and blue as well as white. I prefer using Wilton gel icing colors.

Red is the hardest color to mix, but remember that when you cover the colored fondant in plastic wrap, the color will deepen slightly.

You truly do not need any fancy tools for shaping the fondant. I used:

• a rolling pin for making the fondant smooth and flat
• a small paring knife for scoring and cutting the fondant
• a fondant smoother for removing any small wrinkles
• the large circle from my biscuit cutter set for the circle to cover Mario’s nose
• a letter W cookie cutter (because I could not find my letter M)

Most of the shapes for the face on the Super Mario cake I cut by hand, but you can always enlarge a picture and cut it apart to use as a pattern if you want perfection (or are a little nervous.)

The rim of the hat was the hardest and in hindsight would have been much easier if I had cut a piece of cardboard and covered it with fondant so it would have stood without wilting.

My son loved his Super Mario birthday cake. The only thing he didn’t like? He only got one piece because it went quickly. I might have to make this cake again.
