Easy Organization Tips for Toys

Do you ever feel like your children have too many little toys? If you are like me, you probably cringe when you think about needing to clean or organize their bedroom or playroom.

Consider these easy organization tips to help your children clean up on their own.

Use portable storage drawers

Whether it is Littlest Pet Shop toys, thousands of LEGOs, or some other beloved toys taking over your child’s room, the best way I have found to keep these small items easily organized is by using 3 drawer storage carts. We use the Sterilite 3-drawer cart with see-through drawers and after buying our first 2 drawer sets, I decided to get more! The drawers are clear (which really helps) and they come with wheels so they can be easily moved for cleaning or re-arranging the room.

One of the best features of the plastic drawers is a child can easily pull the whole drawer out. They can set it on the floor to dig through it and find that perfect doll outfit or super hero, then put the drawer back when they are finished. One of my big rules is only 1 drawer out per-child at a time. This is usually an easy rule for them to follow since similar items are kept in the same drawer.

Label it

Labels on each drawer are a HUGE help for our children (and any friends who come over).

This way they know where each toy goes when they clean up. For younger children a picture along with the word for each drawer would be perfect, plus this helps them with sight words.

You might want to consider making a “Miscellaneous Toys” drawer for the hodgepodge of happy meal toys and other assorted odds and ends children seem to collect, yet claim they cannot part with yet.

Get under the bed

If your children have a bunch of stuffed animals consider using some under the bed storage bins for the extras. This way they are still easily accessible, are not gathering dust, and you don’t have 20+ stuffed animals in the bed. Larger toys, like Nerf guns, can also be stored in these bins and slid out of sight under the bed.

Take time for training

Keep in mind, just buying these drawer units and organizing your child’s toys in them will not help keep the room clean.

You will need to teach your child to only take out one drawer at a time and when it’s time to clean up the toys need to go in the correct drawer, not just shoved in any drawer. This will also help prevent lost toys.
