7 Budget Tips for the Lunchbox

Share & Help Me Grow

Companies know that mothers are busy and they play to your time-sensitive nature by packaging products that you can grab quickly, providing your child with lunch in a flash. Unfortunately, that convenience comes at a price.

Cafeteria food is an option but how do you know what your child is actually eating… and what exactly is in the mystery meat?

Consider these tips for packing your child’s lunch without breaking your budget.

  1. Would you purchase produce or even meat that cost $6.00 per pound? NO! So, don’t waste your money on chips and such that is full of stuff your children do not need to eat anyway.
  2. Save on freezer packs. Use a water bottle and partially freeze. Your child can have a cool lunch and water to drink. (Walmart has bottles for just $0.50 a piece!)
  3. Make your own baby carrots, apples wedges and more. Put the family to work on Sunday night and work as a team to get these items prepped and ready for the week.
  4. Use the smallest plastic bag possible for items in the lunch box. Smaller bags cost less! I personally love the snack size.
  5. Do not wash plastic bags and reuse them. These bags were not intended for this purpose and the BPA in the bags can break down over time and sneak into your food. Instead, use reusable cloth bags or washable sandwich bags.
  6. Save money on napkins and use leftover napkins from parties. You child gets a cool new napkin each day!
  7. Help satisfy your child’s hunger longer by making sure each meal and snack involves a protein.

How do you save money when you pack your child’s lunch?
