Practical Guides for Teaching Skills to Children with Autism

Two books for teaching practical skills to children with Autism

For a long time, I expected our daughter to learn basic life skills just by watching us. Then, I realized that children with Autism and Aspergers have to taught deliberately. I had to give her simple, step-by-step instructions for everything from how to wash her hair to how to hold a pencil.

These are two of the books I have found very useful for teaching life skills to children with Autism:

How to Teach Life Skills to Kids with Autism or Asperger’s

Written by Jennifer McIlwee Myers who calls herself an “Aspie at Large,” How to Teach Life Skills to Kids with Autism or Asperger’s offers a unique perspective on how children with Autism Spectrum Disorders think and can be taught. Special attention is paid to teaching topics like personal hygiene, manners, and time management.

1001 Great Ideas for Teaching and Raising Children with Autism or Asperger’s, Revised and Expanded 2nd Edition

In 1001 Great Ideas for Teaching and Raising Children with Autism or Asperger’s, Revised and Expanded 2nd Edition, Ellen Notbohm and Veronica Zysk offer extremely practical tips for guiding children through every facet of life: sensory integration, daily living, socialization, and learning styles. While the title promises 1001 helpful ideas, you actually get much more with over 1800 tips.

Do you have a helpful guide to recommend to parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders?

About Tabitha

Hi! I'm Tabitha! But, I bet you expected someone named "Penny." Long story made short, Penny is the coupon binder I started in 2010 when we were totally broke... as in BANKRUPT. Now, as a mom of five, I make 6-figures a year working at home and share ways to help you move from penny to profit while you raise a family with sense on cents.

hi, I have read so many great recommendations for the books. I think I’ll really get them someday. I wanted to get your opinion on if your being SAHM benefits your child with autism more? I am battling with this, whether to let go of my job and stay at home. Would it be better if I retire early (7-8 yrs to go) by which she would be 14/15 yrs old, which I foresee that the in laws would not be able to look after her after school while I am still at work. Do you think children with autism would be easier to ‘look after’ when they are older? (I am babbling here, sigh)

My 6-year-old daughter has autistic tendencies, but she is also severely mentally insufficient and visually impaired. Do you think these books would help in our situation? Thanks.

Yes, I do… especially the 1001 ways book. If in doubt, check your local library for the book before planning to purchase.
