One Extra Smile Challenge

What if there was one tiny thing you could do each day that would not only change your child’s behavior but also change you?

Hey there, Mom.

I totally understand. Your days are long and your patience is short. You have a ton of things to do on your list and listening to your kids argue and complain isn’t one of them.

You long for a better, more meaningful relationship with your kids but don’t have the time (or budget) for expensive trips.

Buying them a ton of stuff isn’t a substitute either because they just want more… more stuff, more attention, more of you.

And all you feel like doing is locking yourself in a room so you can be totally alone for just five minutes.

It wasn’t my finest day as a parent…

My youngest daughter was born to talk. And I struggle with controlling my anger and depression.

Not a good combination.

One afternoon, I was listening to her tell a story from her day. As the story droned on and on, I felt the tension increasing in my forehead. She began to look anxiously from me to the wall as she tried to quickly share the final moments of her funny tale. That’s when I realized I was scowling at her!

My sweet, bubbly girl was trying to entertain me with something she found extremely important but I was frowning.

I gave myself a little shake and forced the tension to leave my face and shoulders. My lips softened into a smile.

That’s when it happened.

She smiled back.

And I suddenly realized how little smiles throughout her day could meet an important emotional need in her life.

What a difference a smile can make!

Now, I try to give my children one EXTRA smile a day.

It wasn’t easy to create a smiling habit. It’s crazy but I had to work hard to smile. Planned. Purposeful. Intentional. SMILES.

But the difference has been amazing. Not just in the behavior of my children and our relationship with one another. No, the biggest difference has been in ME.

I find that I am more patient. I put down my phone and listen to them while looking deeply into their eyes. I seek out surprise hugs and kisses.

Even more… I am less angry. Less disappointed with myself. Less depressed.
