You just cannot study the letter I without ice cream. So, we had an ice cream sundae party.

You might not think of this as much of a taste test but for us, it is. Lira did not like ice cream until a few months ago. It was one of her sensory things. The children are also very hesitant about new things so I thought that if I piggy-backed a few things into our party, they might “accidentally” try something.

Bill picked up some Neapolitan ice cream and we let them choose which flavor they wanted. Then, they could choose between cherries, whipped topping, sprinkles, peanuts and magic shell.

I really expected them to be apprehensive about the magic shell topping but it was a smashing success.

To bump up the learning potential of such a delicious activity, I read Should I Share My Ice Cream? (An Elephant and Piggie Book) with them as they ate. I made sure to use as may dramatic gestures and sounds as possible.

To my delight, now they think we need to read that book every day. Lira has it memorized and they even act it out. Precious!
Want to add some real cooking to this activity? Why not make your own magic shell?
Homemade Magic Shell
1/2 cup chocolate chips (flavor of your choice)
3 tablespoons coconut oil or butter
Place the chocolate chips in a microwaveable bowl and microwave for one minute. Add the coconut oil or butter and microwave another minute. Stir and continue to microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring between until smooth.

Oh fun! My kids love ice cream but I totally understand the sensory issues because we deal with some of those too. THANK YOU for the homemade magic shell directions! I will try that out this weekend! 🙂
I hope the magic shell turned out well for you. My kids went from being scared of it to begging for it.
