How to Fill a Frugal Easter Basket

Share & Help Me Grow

Filling an Easter basket doesn’t need to be expensive. Break the habit of overfilling an Easter basket with these frugal Easter tips.

Great tips for how to fill a frugal Easter basket

When our first child was born, we celebrated with a HUGE visit from the Easter Bunny. But, add two kids to that and our budget has shrunk! As I think about it, how much candy and junk do our kids really need? After all, we want our focus to more spiritual than material anyway. So here are some frugal tips and links for creating an Easter basket without breaking the bank.

Choosing a Frugal Easter Basket

What is your first step to a frugal Easter basket? Use the same basket each year! Make it a tradition!

Don’t have a basket you can reuse? Find a plain wicker basket at a yard sale, paint and decorate it. You can even get the kids involved in preparing their baskets for the late-night visit from the fluffy bunny.

Skip the Easter grass (or pick it up on sale at Walgreens for $0.88) and use shredded paper. Plus, save another couple of dollars by leaving off the cellophane. It just ends up in the trash anyway!

Filling a Frugal Easter Basket

Younger children:

  • Reuse plastic eggs each year and fill them with jellybeans.
  • Wrap homemade goodies in colorful tissue or cellophane.
  • Grab a bottle of bubbles!
  • Make homemade playdough.
  • Pick up some stickers and paper at the Dollar Store.
  • Add a coloring book and crayons (also available at the Dollar Store.)
  • Make a sock puppet.

Older children:

  • Use sample sized toiletries for boys and beauty treats for girls.
  • Think retro and get a jump rope, slinky or jacks.
  • Pick up some flash cards or card games.
  • Grab a toothbrush and some toothpaste.
  • Check the Dollar Store for water balloons and silly string.
  • Stick with a Spring theme and get kites, seed packets and more!

And, always check the clearance area around the toys, beauty, office supplies and party sections!  You never know what kind of goodies you will find!

About Tabitha

Hi! I'm Tabitha! But, I bet you expected someone named "Penny." Long story made short, Penny is the coupon binder I started in 2010 when we were totally broke... as in BANKRUPT. Now, as a mom of five, I make 6-figures a year working at home and share ways to help you move from penny to profit while you raise a family with sense on cents.

one year my mom gave me a purse and used it as my Easter Basket and my son wanted a cowboy hat and I used it as his, also sand buckets filled with beach toys are fun.
