Several years ago, Bill and I were so poor that we even had to get rid of our pets. We still miss those cats terribly but were recently able to add two more furry creatures to our home, Lulu and Lucy, from the Mobile SPCA. The children adore them and I am so happy that we now know how to save money and will not be forced to make another choice to lose our pets.
So, in honor of Lulu and Lucy and National Pet Month, here are a few tips on how to keep your pet and live a frugal life:
- Make your own toys. Put bells in an Easter Egg and tape shut for Fluffy and cut a pair of old jeans into strips, making a braid for a chew (tug o war) toy for Fido.
- Give Fluffy a treat next time you open up a can of tuna. Pour the tuna liquid over dry cat food and watch the kitty’s delight.
- Remember to stockpile your pet’s food just like you do your own… and I do not recommend switching foods frequently as this can lead to tummy troubles (and who wants to clean out that litter box?!?!)
- Consider pet insurance if you have an aging pet. Check with your vet for details. It may be less expensive than you think.
- Measure your pet’s food with a scoop. Do not just pour it into the bowl.
- If you buy food in bulk, make sure you put it into a sealed (air tight) container to avoid it getting stale.
- To keep a pet from chewing on electrical cords, rub them down with bar soap.
- Make your own scratching post by wrapping cord, rope or a piece of carpet around a 2×4.
- Always spay and/or neuter your pets!
