As a brand ambassador for Udi’s Gluten Free, I have received products for my endorsement but opinions are 100% my own.
The holidays can be such a difficult time for people who live a gluten free lifestyle, and often, the gluten free kids do not get to enjoy the “fun” food, the cookies that look like Pilgrim hats and such. So I set out on a mission to make something cute for the youngest of my gluten free friends.
I had to do some research about which candies are actually gluten free and discovered a fabulous listing of gluten free candy at Celiac Family.
For this post, I chose to use:
- Jelly Belly Candy Corn for the tail and beak
- Swedish Fish for the wattle
- Plymouth Pantry Chocolate-flavored Almond Bark for the coating
Haribo gummy bears are also gluten free and could be used for the wattle, but something about slicing red gummy bears into pieces made me cringe.
If the candy corn makes you nervous, you can microwave Starburst candies for two seconds or so and mold them into feathers.
Gluten Free Brownies
The best short cut for creating these turkeys is to start with the gluten free brownies by Udi’s Gluten Free. Since they are certified gluten free, no research was required. Awesome.
To make the turkeys, remove the wrappers from each brownie.
Melt the almond bark according to package directions. I used roughly 1/4 of the package to cover one package of Udi’s Gluten Free Brownie Bites.
Using two forks, gently toss the brownie in the coating. Place on wax paper upside down to dry.
Then, place a little of the almond bark coating on the candies to make them stick. Since almond bark does not take long to harden, these are ready in minutes!
Some of my Facebook friends thought my little impressionistic turkeys needed a head but my children did not seem to mind at all. They quickly gobbled the brownies up, pardon the pun, and asked when I would make them again.
But, if you agree with some of my Facebook friends who think that my turkeys look a little… creepy… without heads, some of the best recommendations for adding a head are:
- Add a round chocolate candy.
- Use almonds with dots of chocolate for the eyes.
- Shape a Tootsie Roll into a head.
- Add Wilton eyes to the turkey, but realize that these may not be gluten free.
