Time for a true confession. Bill and I have only been frugal for a year. I mean TRULY frugal. We learn more each day and that is why I enjoy getting to know you guys too because I am learning from you.
Wanting more for our wedding than I could afford brought me to all these tips I have been sharing with you these last two weeks. Why am I saying this… because we went into debt for our honeymoon. I regret to have to admit that now.
Do not get me wrong! We had a wonderful time and have many memories that will never fade, but I think the purpose of the honeymoon is to get adjusted to being married and to bask in what that means, not to mention rest from all the hustle and bustle of a wedding. All of that could have been accomplished without the purchase of airline tickets.
So, while the romantic movies might lure you into visions of faraway islands or romantic escapes, think closer to home.
Where could you go to get away that would be equally special but infinitely less expensive. Perhaps a friend owns a beach house or a cabin. Maybe you can just drive to the coast. Take a road trip and visit a couple of sights that you have always wanted to see but never took the time to go. Pack items in your suitcase that will make a basic hotel room romantic.
The point is, everything that leads up to the moment you say, “I do” is special but it is the day after the wedding when the festivities are over and you begin to solidify your life together. Why not avoid building that life on a foundation of debt?
I wish I had been smart enough to listen to someone like me eight years and several credit cards ago.
