Penny, Can you freeze sour cream and yogurt?
My first answer was NO for sour cream and MAYBE on the yogurt! But, I decided to dig a little and this is what I discovered: YES to both!
Sour Cream:
You can freeze it if you plan to use it in cooking or baking, but it is not recommended if you plan to use it as a dip or on your baked potato. Sour cream separates when frozen and takes on the consistency of cottage cheese. It’s fine to use, but won’t have the texture you would expect. ~The Food Channel
Okay, so the texture changes, but here is what I am thinking… If you put the defrosted sour cream in a food processor as you might do cottage cheese to make it more like ricotta, would it make it creamy again. Not sure but if you have tried it, I would love to hear from you!
Of course, you may not realize that sour cream will stay good in your refrigerator (tightly sealed) for one week past the date on the package. So, is freezing really necessary? Depends on what kind of deal yo find on sour cream and when you need it.
Yogurt:
Freezing yogurt can change the texture just like sour cream… if you are thawing it before eating it. You could always just eat it frozen! This works really great with yogurt that has been whipped.
Of course, with both sour cream and yogurt, you should allow them to come to room temperature before cooking with them and once cooked, you will not notice the texture changes.
I hope this helps you!
Thanks to O-Chef for help with this post!

I’ve noticed that the regular sour cream will keep quite a bit past the sell by date especially if you scrape down the side and level it off after use. We used to buy the lower fat and it would mold before the sell by date.
Also…I eat yogurt for the health benefits of the cultures and you miss out on these if you eat it frozen or partially frozen…they go dormant. Which is a shame because I love to eat it frozen. 🙂
