I have never bought a birthday cake for my children. Does it make me better than you if I make them by hand each year? Nope. But, it might make me a little bit richer.
Cakes are easy. If you do not mind the box mixes, you can get them on sale with coupons for just pennies. If you make them from scratch, DITTO. The icing, whether you buy it or make it, is a little bit more expensive but not much.
Now, let’s be honest. Do I make the cake and decorate it myself because it is frugal? Hmmmmm… That might have a little bit to do with it. But, the real reason why I make the cakes myself is… I love that feeling of accomplishment and the pride of being able to say, “I made that.” I love when people ooooooh and aaaaaaah. I love looking back at the pictures and remembering the process, the reaction from my children, the taste… even when it is a little on the dry side.
Some years, the cakes are AwEsOmE!
Some years… well…
Regardless, it is fun for me to be able to give this special gift to my children.

I used to buy the cakes for my kids. Now that I am gluten free, I make them. I don’t get fancy with them (I would embarrass myself too much, not artistic). 🙂

I have done both. I prefer to make them because I think they are cuter, usually taste better and cost much less. I love coming up with an idea for a cake & honestly I love to hear ‘this is cute/tastes good, did you make it?’ 🙂 Love your Little Einsteins cake.

I love the compliments too, Debra. As Moms, we don’t get pats on the back very often, and I think getting praise for a job well done is just… the icing on the cake. LOL
