In our home, we spend a lot of time talking about Jesus and grace, salvation and faith. If you asked me about our children’s understanding and knowledge of the Bible, I would have said, “Oh, we are doing great!” with a strong pat on my own back.
Then, there was that light bulb moment that happened several weeks ago…
I don’t remember the exact nature of our conversation, but I was talking with the children about what they were doing. I said, “You know, it’s kind of like what Noah did.”
Franc (6 years old) looked at me sincerely and asked, “Mommy, who is Noah?”
I laughed and replied, “Silly! You know… Noah in the Bible.” His response was a blank look and a slow shake of his head.
Even as I write this, the shame crawls across my heart. I had failed to make sure my children knew the most basic of Bible stories.
That evening, I told Bill about the exchange and his pain matched my own. In that moment, we made a commitment to get back to the basics and educate our children in Bible History to make sure we allowed God every opportunity to speak into their lives.
Listening to Your Story Hour daily
Part of our plan is to incorporate Bible audios into our daily rest time routine.
As the children color quietly or play their electronic games, we have Your Story Hour audios playing in the background. Â As a matter of fact, lately we have been playing the Your Story Hour audios any time we are together in the living room… instead of playing the television.
About Your Story Hour
Established in 1949, Your Story Hour produces dramatized audio stories to reinforce the importance of making good choices. Each story begins with a friendly intro by Uncle Dan and Aunt Carole, and the stories incorporate different voices with quality acting to draw the children’s attention.
And, I have to say, that while you might assume these audios would be old-fashioned due to the longevity of the company, I can assure you that they are still vivid and applicable to our lives.
Interesting facts about Your Story Hour:
- The audio stories are currently available in English, Spanish, and Russian.
- Your Story Hour has 52 Â lessons and quizzes available online at Adventures in the Holy Bible.
- A children’s magazine, Clubhouse, can be viewed online or printed and is full of fun for your kids.
- Your Story Hour is still broadcast from radio stations around the country.
- The company operates on donations from generous people like you.
